th Grade Third Trimester Social Studies Project

Background Information: Coming just two decades after the last great global conflict, the Second World War was the most widespread and deadliest war in history, involving more than 30 countries and resulting in more than 50 million military and civilian deaths (with some estimates as high as 85 million dead). Sparked by Adolf Hitler’s invasion of Poland in 1939, the war would drag on for six deadly years until the final Allied defeat of both Nazi Germany and Japan in 1945.
You will be required to completed 1 of 3 project options below. This project will require you to use your research skills as well as your creativity.
A Yearbook: As your time to OLV comes to an end, you may start to think about how your class will be remembered. Yearbooks are a great way of capturing a moment in time and sharing the personality of a class for generations to come. You will create a yearbook for a class graduating between 1942-1944. This yearbook should not only capture popular moments of the era (music, movies, radio programs, sports) but also some mention of the war. Your yearbook must include: a class favorites pages
At least 5-10 fictional students
A message from the principal/teacher
A mention of alumni/graduates/students who are fighting in the war
2) A CD/Playlist: Music is a great way of telling a story. Create a playlist of 10-12 songs telling the story of WWII. You may focus on a specific aspect of the war (life on the homefront, war in the Pacific, war in Europe, the Holocaust, etc). Your project must include:
A brief description of each song and how it relates to your story
Cover art and a title
At least 2 songs must be from that time period
3) Diary/Journal: Create a journal taking on the role of one of the people listed below. Your journal should have at least 10-12 entries that are dated and describe your daily life. Please include pictures where appropriate. Choose to be one of the following:
A soldier in :
A WAAC (WAC) (Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps)
A WASP (Women Airforce Service Pilot)
A teen whose older brother signed up to fight in the war
A Japanese-American about to be “relocated”
A Rosie-the-Riveter type female worker
Be as creative as possible!
